Sori in some ovaries of an inflorescence,
globose to subglobose, 2.5-3.5 mm diam., covered by a thin olivaceous
brown peridium, at maturity rupturing irregularly to expose the dark
brown semi-agglutinated to granular-powdery mass of spore balls.
Spore balls subglobose, ovoid, ellipsoidal
to subpolyhedrally irregular, 30-125 × 25-70 µm, dark reddish brown or
opaque, composed of tens to hundreds of tightly packed spores that
separate under moderate pressure, covered in a dark reddish brown
amorphous layer 2.5-3.5 µm thick.
Spores subglobose, broadly ellipsoidal to
subpolyhedrally irregular, 8.5-12.0 × 7-10 µm, pale reddish brown; wall
smooth, 0.5-1.0 µm thick; outer spores with remnants of spore ball
coating attached.
